This year in the UK there are over 16 million people living in poverty. Of those, 4.3 million are children; that's 1 in every 3 child you see on a daily basis that is living in poverty right here, right now, in the UK.
12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days a year of not being able to have even the simple basics.
As we head into winter, facing the energy and cost of living crisis, this dire situation will become even worse. With heavier strain on already insufficient finances, millions of families will be struggling to heat their homes, let alone put food on the table. Christmas can often compound family distress as parents cant always buy sufficient food for their children. Funds for presents are scarce. Parents often feel ashamed, believing they're letting their children down. Teenagers often try to minimise their demands on a parent because they're worried for their parents wellbeing. Feelings of depression and anxiety increase during this time. Despite these challenges our families are courageous and resilient. They just need our help.
Oasis-Nurture supports vulnerable children and families with reduction of toxic stress whilst building on family resilience. The project is part of Oasis UK which has been working in communities across the UK for approximately 40 years.
In anticipation of Christmas, many vulnerable parents and children begin to feel hopeless. Self harm and suicide attempts escalate. Our response to this has been to set ourselves the goal of ensuring this doesn't happen.
With just £100 per family we can provide food for 28 meals (i.e. two meals a day over the two week break) as well as a game for everyone to enjoy. In addition, our Living Rooms located across the country - welcome families and vulnerable individuals in for warmth, sustenance and some joyful activities. Our aim is to reduce loneliness whilst responding practically to the poverty facing families.
We would be grateful for any donations. 100% of which will go on the provision of food and a large bag to carry it in as the programme is staffed by volunteers during this time.
Please ask friends and family to help us with this campaign. On Christmas Day, because of your kindness, families will feel cherished.
Theres only OneXmas, so lets all help make it a good one.
